In two of my most recent posts "how I gained self control" and "why discipline is important to me," I briefly mentioned mixed martial arts being a key element in learning those two skills. Learning how to practice mixed martial arts showed me the importance of discipline and self control.
Practice is meaningful and mindful repetition. When you practice a new skill, you have to be patient in that moment. Discipline is one element of patience. You have to give yourself the opportunity to do the new skill correctly, and the self control to try again without getting frustrated. Practicing this way will give you a better understanding of the importance of practice.
Practicing teaches discipline. Discipline is a key element in accomplishing life goals because it gives you the strength to try again even after failing. The way martial arts taught me self control was through sparring and grappling. When I spar and grapple there is always someone that is better than me. Learning from their skills teaches me the importance of being in control of my emotions so that I can learn. By sparring with my fellow classmates and by knowing that the goal is to not harm one another the opportunity to learn more from one another is always present.
Very good stuff Jimmy. I found this one especially relatable because I practiced football for 4 years in HS. As you mentioned, a lot of discipline and self control was learned. Another key trait that sports like these teach us is resilience, how to succeed in the face of adversity. Love the thoughtfulness of this- Jose
